Web hosting for businesses

Hosting a website that is for your business, as opposed to a home or personal website, has some implications that you need to be aware of. For a business, every minute, be it 5 o’clock in the date or 11 o’clock at night your website is your shop front. Your shop needs to be available all the time.

If your website is off, through server overload, or through routine maintenance that extended on too long, or the fact that the hosting company hasn’t fixed a problem then your website could be off. Research shows that a website that doesn’t work people are unlikely to ever come back to.

For a business you need a Service Level Agreement (SLA). This is a contract between you and the hosting company to say that if your website, for whatever reason, is not online then you are entitled to compensation. Needless to say, a hosting company will never want to offer any compensation so they will make damn sure that your website is online all the time. This is great for you, because it’s what you want. It does have a cost though. For a business it is well worth it.

How do you find a hosting company offering SLAs?

Look closely on their website. You won’t find it on their normal accounts, they are cheap and cheerful, but don’t have the level of support suitable for online businesses. Look for the business packages, or if you cant find one that give them a call.
